CAN Inc. Artist-in-Residence Program hosted by Cowwarr Art Space, Victoria, Australia

The program is open year round, no deadlines,opportunities depend on availability.

The Artist-in-Residence Program is an integral part of life at Cowwarr Art Space. The owners and co-directors Carolyn Crossley and sculptor Clive Murray-White live in a portion of the Art Space and warmly welcome the broadest range of arts practices, related disciplines and nationalities to the Space. “...It is always an amazing experience and privilege to have artists from around the world sharing part of their lives and art with us at the Cowwarr Art Space. This is what makes the Art Space a unique place and provides us all with a broader perspective on Art and world affairs.”

Cowwarr Art Space, a unique regional contemporary arts venue, has been operating since 1993 in a restored heritage industrial Butter Factory C.1918 situated on the outskirts of Cowwarr, a small rural community in Victoria, Australia. It provides the perfect creative haven for artists wanting to get away from it all and make new work in a self-directed residency focused individual project or in collaboration. The country location between Traralgon and Maffra in the rich dairy country with a backdrop of the Victorian Alps lends itself to a calm reflective experience.

STUDIOS:

Accommodation is available for artists for either long term or short term residencies. The options are two guest bedrooms and three studio flats; the Garden Studio, Balcony Studio and Courtyard Studio. The studio flats are self contained with their own cooking facilities. Meals can be pre-arranged with added costs for the guest rooms and overnight stays. All guests are expected to leave the studios clean and tidy. WI-FI is available and there is limited public transport to larger nearby towns. You can catch a lift for shopping trips and to the major transport hub at Traralgon.(train to Melbourne)

The menace of the everyday world at night is the subject of Gippsland artist Janina Green’s new photographic series, Be Home Before Dark.

Green’s dramatic nocturnes are inspired by memories of running home at night alone, along unmade roads with no street lighting, after overstaying evenings at friends’ houses. Ordinary objects like trees, tractors, cows and silos become laced with peril in strange and gothic landscapes. Elsa took up residence in the CAN Inc. Garden studio near the end of the Uni year to focus on her final studies and to prepare her final portfolio and works for her graduation exhibition. It is always great fun to go to a Grad show but doubly so when it is your daughter graduating. Clive and I snuck in before the crowds for a preview of the BA Fine Art - Painting student exhibition on November 23 at 5:00pm until December 9. Three floors packed with the works of the 3rd year painting students bursting with energy and potential. As stated in the catalogue by Dr Phil Edwards School of Art RMIT "They are now officially, "Emerging" Artists. They are to be congratulated"

Elsa had the ultimate accolade when the proprietors of Tolano's purchased her large work What is your fear dear? that is destined to grace the walls of the St Kilda Hotel steeped in Melbourne's art history. It was great to be able to attend Jamie's first solo show at the Latrobe Contemporary Galley last Friday night 9th Dec 2011. Jamie Hall (Charleston) was our artist-in-res in 2010-11 in the courtyard studio with his partner Tori Startford. He converted the CAN Inc. kiln room to a dark room and it is great to see the results of Jamie's labour. We will be able to keep an eye on his art progress as Jamie is continuing his studies at Gippsland School of Art and Design.

The Cowwarr Art Space came into being when Carolyn Crossley purchased the old Cowwarr Butter Factory in November 1992. It took six months of extensive renovations before it opened as the Cowwarr Art Space in June 1993 . Carolyn was led by her own personal vision to create a highly flexible, inclusive Art Space. It is through relationships that this vision is achieved. She created Cowwarr Arts Network Inc. (CAN Inc.) an independent, not for profit, arts organisation, that has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of both the arts and the local community. She has developed strong links with local artists, arts organisations, both regional, state and national and has been involved with many arts and tourism forums, panels and focus groups at all levels of government. When Sculptor Clive Murray-White joined as her partner at the Art Space, in 1996, it created a new dimension with the addition of the Australian Marble Sculpture Studio.

Sherryn Vardy our CAN Inc. The Very Big Draw

Close to 200 participants attended The Big Draw community day on Sunday the 16th of Oct at the Gippsland Art Gallery Sale.

David Blumenstein & Sarah Howell (illustrators) and Sue Fraser & Cameron Fraser (printmakers) were part of the hard working BIG DRAW team.

Pictured above, David & Sarah at work. David was involved in this year's CAN Inc. artist-in-res program and his involvement in the Big Draw was as a direct result of his residency.

I believe Anton Vardy the Gallery Director, spent most of the day at the B-B-Q trying to keep up with the public demand for sausages. What a success and congratulations to Louise Van Kuyk the Education Coordinator and all the volunteers and helpers on the day.

Izabela got right down to the task of researching material for her exhibition at the Gippsland Art Gallery Sale in 2012. She had perfect spring weather for her week at the bottom of the garden. Mid week, we had a great Polish meal at the Cowwarr Hotel, BIGOS (Hunters Stew) thanks to Helena and Val who also originated from Poland.

We were able to celebrate with IZABELA PLUTA as she had just been notified of her success in receiving an Australian Council Grant to research and create new work based on the 'phony' landscapes and prefabricated ruins.

Although it was only a short residency it was enjoyed by all. We look forward to Izabela's return in 2012.

We look forward to Izabela joining us for a short residency as she works towards an exhibition at the Gippsland Art Gallery Salefor 2011. Izabel was born in Warsaw, Poland and migrated to Australia in 1986. Pluta currently lectures in Photography in Sydney. Izabela works in photomedia and installation and has exhibited widely in Australia and is represented by Dianne Tanzer Gallery, Melbourne where she exhibited On things mended and broken in 2011.

I first met Izabela when she visited the Gippsland Art Gallery Sale when Simon Gregg the Curator had included her in the 2009 exhibition à la dérive. We chatted then of the possibility of a residency.
Izabela has undertaken a number of other residencies including; Australia Council Studio residency in Barcelona, Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, International Art Space Kellerberrin, WA., Cite des Arts International in Paris and now the CAN Inc. Garden Studio in Cowwarr.

Izabela's current exhibition Reservoir is showing at Eastern Bloc Gallery 138 Evans St Rozelle NSW 2039

from the 5th-21st August 2011. Gallery Hrs Wed-Sat 11am-5pm.

A reservoir is a place where anything can be collected and stored, however, more commonly the term refers to an artificial lake. If the reservoir bursts, the spillage may lead to a condition of ruin. The motivation for this exhibition is a set of ideas that Pluta has been considering which relate to this term.

David Blumenstein our Resident Funny Man

My wife and I are both illustrator type people, and went on our honeymoon earlier this year. It was a fantastic trip, but once we got back, she pointed out that she had expected to have more time to draw things while we were away.

Hence we decided we'd both (individually) get out of town for a week at some point to work solely on our own art. I mostly work freelance as an animator and storyboard artist, so I'm used to working on both paid and personal work at the same time, but it can be difficult to concentrate on one thing for an extended period, especially writing, when there's so much else around to distract you.

So I'm planning to hole up at Cowwarr Art Space and work properly on some things that would otherwise get squeezed into late nights, train rides to work, etc.

I do a weekly comic strip called The Bret Braddock Adventures and post it every Monday at http://www.docklandsentertainment.com/

One thing I want to do while I'm in Cowwarr is to get a few pages done ahead of time, so I have some breathing room later in the year and don't have to scramble to finish strips when work is heavy.

The other main thing I want to do while I'm there is to write one or two scripts for an animated cop show called The Precinct that we're currently proposing to a TV network. I'm not sure if the country location will affect the writing, but I'll certainly have a chat with the local coppers if I see them down the pub.

Laura and I took a trip to East Gippsland to visit the oneofftwo contemporary jewellery workshop & gallery, the studio of Dora Stockhausen & Marcus Foley. Laura had some technical jewellery questions that Marcus with his considerable talent and experience came up with some useful ideas to solve the problem. Christmas with an international flavor

Laura, our current artist-in-residence from the Netherlands, Iris our recent past artist-in-residence, on her way back to visit family in Israel, Karine a friend from Québec, gave Christmas at the Cowwarr Art Space a true international flavor. Friends and family enjoyed a traditional Christmas lunch with hot turkey (free range Leadoux Turkeys from the shores of the Gippsland Lakes) with all the trimmings followed by hot Chrisy pud with lashings of brandy butter. The international flavor was not confined to the guest list as international festive food of, Oliebollen, Appelbeignets ( traditional dutch pastry similar to doughnuts and apple fritters) and Maple Syrup Tarts were also on the menu.

We welcome our new Artist-in-Residence, Laura van Schie who is arriving later this month from Amsterdam. A graduate from the Arts school Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrech with a Bachelor of Fashion and Design. She works as a freelance designer. Laura's blog

Her residency concept is the explore who humans regard certain insects as pests and attempt to control them using insecticides disregarding there inherit usefulness and beauty. It is Laura intent to make insect jewelery to reconnect people with these little gems.

As usual, he has wasted no time in organising an exhibition and is busy working towards a group show in Atlanta. It has previously been shown, in Australia, at Latrobe Regional Gallery, Victoria (2009) as part of Turbulent Terrain (Curated by Bryony Nainby) and Devenport Regional Gallery, Tasmania (2010) and at Tramway, Glasgow, Scotland, UK (2008)

Hurrel's seismic piece utilizes internet and computer technology to collate information from ground stations around the world and convert the subsonic data into audible and visual representations of the earth moving so visitors to the installation can see and hear the earth's activity in real time. Like many touring exhibitions that require a significant amount of technology and techy knowhow it had significant teething problems. A few long nights networking computers from Cowwarr to Glasgow till the wee small hours, to try and sort out various syncing and streaming issues, so we could bringing real time, real world environmental ‘events’ into the gallery.

An exciting technological breakthrough has been developed so that the seismic work can now run entirely from the Internet - all the processing work happens on his server/computer (in Glasgow) - No technological wizardry required by the Gallery. So all the gallery needs is a computer with a decent sound system, a video projector and a broadband connection.

It was Hurrel's Aussie techy Bob Farrell, residing in Glasgow, who created the technology... it really does open up more opportunities for the delivery of this sort of technology based work. They are now hoping to create an iphone app of the piece. So now we have a 'happy ending' not only is the work easily accessible, the added technology that usually creates an installation nightmare has saved the day. So there is a positive ecological/carbon footprint aspect that Stephen Hurrel espoused to, but failed to achieve in the original incarnation. Sometimes the artists' vision extends beyond the capabilities of current technology, forcing innovation and technological development.

Iris completed her studies of Communication & Multimedia design over three years ago and has completed a number of courses at the Art Science department of the Royal Academy in The Hague. Along this road she discovered that writing is her true passion. In 2005 Iris took part in a Digital media exchange program at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) College of Fine Arts, Sydney and has been wanting to make the journey back to Australia ever since. Whilst in residence Iris will be working on her second novel. It is in the contemporary style and in English. It is a work of fiction, commentating on contemporary life, social and environmental politics as she sees it, in the Hague. Iris feels the isolation and distance from her source material will give her a clearer view of her subject matter. Iris is getting into the the country life, her first Aussie Rules Footy match, swiming in the Rainbow creek and cycling around the country roads. As you can see she is enjoying the outdoor studio facilities in the courtyard.

The purpose of their short residency was to research the concept of developing a contemporary opera based on the novel The Pea Pickers by Eve Langley. This extraordinary tale set in Gippsland in the 1920’s of Steve and Blue two sisters who, dressed as men, who take on the role of itinerant fruit and vegetable pickers for farms thought Gippsland but their disguise is partial - and their quest is for love. The journey covers the diverse and extreme environs of Gippsland and also the very personal journeys of the girls. Hence it was important that both Bonny and Jeff experienced that same environment to give them the knowledge and the scope for artistic interpretation.

Bonny is a poet, lecturer, and President of Sydney PEN. Her writing has appeared in various journals including HEAT, Overland, Southerly and The Australian Literary Review, and in 2008 she undertook an Asialink/Malcolm Robertson Foundation literature fellowship in Japan. Her first collections of poems, Certain Fathoms (Puncher & Wattmann) and Said To Be Standing (Vagabond Press) will appear in summer 2009-10. Bio from http://redroomcompany.org

Jeff's works have been performed by various ensembles/ musicians throughout Australia including Sonic Connections, the University of Sydney Orchestra and various musicians/ ensembles at the Australian Institute of Music. He has composed a full length film score for The Game Room (director Joe Tornatore) and was the musical director for an episode of Blue Water High (producer Ian Watson, televised by the ABC in 2005-2006). Jeff has also worked in collaboration with graphic artists which has resulted in works such as Metropolis (short abstract film) and The Dream Job (animation). His latest works include a double guitar concerto (Melita Fantasie), composed utilizing Maltese folk melodies and a song cycle for piano and voice in the Maltese language.

Janina Green an artist and lecturer in Photography at the Victorian College of the Arts will take up a short residency in the newly renovated Courtyard Studio Flat. Since her first solo exhibition in 1986 she has had an extensive exhibition record producing seven different bodies of work; Reproduction, Still Life, Figure Works, Manual Labour, Vacuum, Plantation and Scooping Up the Moon at Plum Creek, maid in Hong Kong. Janina Green Studied Fine Arts at Melbourne University and at Victoria College, Prahran. Completed a Diploma of Art, majoring in Printmaking at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Melbourne, 1965 Art reviewer for The Melbourne Times for five years.

Janina Green Where the Heart Is Latrobe Regional Gallery 10 Octr - 15 Nov 2009

Janina Green’s photographic exhibition honours the Ukrainian families who migrated to the Latrobe Valley from the Displaced Persons’ Camps in Europe 60 years ago. Green’s mural-size photographs reflect the role of place as a setting for productive lives of human resilience and survival. This is part of a larger project for the National Library of Australia. The seniors in the portraits are the survivors of approximately 150 families who arrived in the late 1940s and still live in Moe, Newborough or Yallourn North, but for various reasons many of their children and grandchildren have left the Latrobe Valley.

This experience applies to Green herself, as she is one of these children. This is the project Janina worked on whilst in residence.

Conceived by the curator Claire Watson, Sojourn in White explores the kind of collaborative dialogue that occurs between artists at international residency programs. The project’s title was inspired by “the snowy grounds” of the artist-in-residency program Saksala ArtRadius, where the project was first conceived and where Rae and Van Den Berk initiated a series of drawings based on the Finnish winter. As Watson writes, “It was there that Rae and Van Den Berk developed new strategies in their divergent practices, drawn together by the white landscape and the unusual discovery of a white pair of Victorian underpants from the residency’s attic.” In October 2008, Rae then traveled from his home in Iran to the Cowwarr Art Space, bringing his memories of Finland’s landscape and the underwear he found there. These he gave to Marino, provoking yet another dialogue and exchange between two artists who might never had met, save for this residency. Marino, then, used the underwear to create Lands Collide, two exact replicas of the underpants, presented alongside the original pair. On one pair is an image of Finland connected by threads to another pair with an image of Cowwarr, thus, symbolizing the connection between these places.“As these artists ventured into a course of collaborative intervention,” Watson continues, “they were guided into new and challenging territory; they embarked on a sojourn in white…[resulting in] a most unusual tale of collision and place within varying landscapes across the world.”

Maria-Luisa Marino Artist Statement:

My Italo-Australian culture inherently has an identity crisis. Like all immigrants we have a shared experience of neither fitting comfortably within our inherited culture or our acquired culture of birth.

This cultural crisis can result in being an outsider within both cultural societies. In my work I have explored the resulting tendencies of the 'New Australians' to take sanctuary in life before immigration by surrounding themselves with photographs, religious paraphernalia and intimate items that evoke memories and a sense of belonging. These consolatory items, for a moment, allow migrant Italians to experience some stability in their identities, even if it's clinging to a reality of a past that no longer exists, even in the old country.

The use of apparel creates an intimacy and a hint of secrecy as these significant icons of the past are secreted close to the body, partially hidden but also accessible. These objects can provide the desired comfort in maintaining the links to the past. It is nostalgia that drives my culture to hold onto this mentality of the past and it is their inability to fully belong to either culture that will forever make them marginal men.

This residency came about when Behrouz Rae an Iranian based artist met Claire Watson, curator and installation artist, in Finland where they were both Artists-in-residence at Saksala ArtRadius.

In the snowy grounds of Saksala ArtRadius in Haukivuori, Finland the project Sojourn in White was conceived. It is based around the collaborative dialogue that occurs within international arts residencies.

The artists ventured into a course of collaborative intervention, which led them into new creative territory. Behrouz Rae has join Maria-Luisa Marino in the artist-in-residence at the Cowwarr Art Space to continue this international exchange.

Sojourn in White will be curated by Claire Watson and exhibited at the Cowwarr Art Space and in the Maffra Exhibition Space in December 2008. Artists - Behrouz Rae, Iran, Ilse Van Den Berk The Netherlands and Maria-Luisa Marino, Australia.

Behrouz Rae Born in Sumgait, Azerbaijan. He now lives and works in Tehran, Iran.

In 2006 he completed a B.A degree in Photography, Azad University, Tehran, Iran.
